Metro New York New York Businesses Increase Tsunami Donation Efforts
 |
 |
MANHATTAN New York's
businesses, small and large,
are stepping up for the
tsunami relief efforts.
"It's nothing for us to
encourage our members to
donate and put a link on the
Web sites," said Jared Nissim,
founder of networking
sites, MeetTheNeighbors.org
and TheLunchClub.net. He
has put a link to the Red
Cross disaster fund.
"What else can we do?" Nissim
asked. "It's not like we
can go over and volunteer
and we've been discouraged
from donating canned food."
Rent-Direct.com, a New
York apartment agency, is
donating a percentage from
its January sales to AmeriCares and Architects for
Humanity. Richard Oceguera,
Rent Direct's director
of marketing, selected them
because "we were concerned
about immediate needs like
water," and "we wanted to
do something related to
housing because we're in
real estate."
Architects for Humanity,
a Hoboken-based group, has
raised $60,000 from individuals — ranging from seventh
graders to architecture students
and design professionals.
The organization
has built permanent homes
in devastated communities
like Kosovo and Grenada and
its pro bono architects are
now tackling South Asia.
Events guide L Magazine
yesterday used its pages to
organize a fund-raiser.
"There's a real sense
around the office to put
whatever resources we have
into this," publisher Scott
Stedman said.
